What Does a Financial Advisor Do? A Day in the Life at Flower City Capital

Flower City Capital

Upon first meeting with a financial advisor, you may wonder what it is that we actually do on an everyday basis. The truth is that it varies every day, and at Flower City Capital, our days may look a little different than your average financial advisor’s. In this post, we walk through what sets our approach apart and what a typical day looks like for our team.

How Much Time Should a Financial Advisor Spend With You?

A financial advisor should spend as much time with you as your situation needs. At many firms, though, an advisor’s time is shaped by internal rules rather than by what clients need.

Many advisors are required to hold a certain number of prospect meetings, which takes time away from the clients they already serve. Many also follow strict calendar rules that limit every meeting to one hour, whether or not that’s enough to cover what a client needs to talk through. And many work within strict service calendars that limit when clients can reach the rest of the team.

That’s not how we work at Flower City Capital. Our advisors don’t have prospect meeting requirements, our meetings take as long as they need to, and clients can reach the whole team whenever a question comes up.

What Does a Day in the Life of a Financial Advisor at Flower City Capital Look Like?

At Flower City Capital, no two days look the same. A day might start with an in-depth annual review, shift to a few client calls about decisions that just came up, and end with time spent on planning work for another family. The common thread is that the work follows what clients need.

Annual reviews are often the anchor of the day. They’re where we step back and look at the whole picture: income, investments, taxes, estate plans, and what has changed in a client’s life over the past year. Some reviews wrap up in an hour. Others run a couple of hours, because there is a lot to talk through and we’d rather get it right than stay on schedule.

In between, questions come in. Life doesn’t wait for the next scheduled check-in, so on any given day several clients may reach out about something new. One is deciding whether to buy or lease a car. Another wants to know how a year-end bonus fits into their plan. These conversations happen as questions come up, and they often matter just as much as the formal meetings.

What Happens Behind the Scenes at a Financial Planning Firm?

Much of what keeps a financial plan on track happens outside client meetings. That includes team meetings, quick huddles to move work forward, and detailed planning analysis that turns a conversation into a plan someone can act on.

Some days include a full team meeting, where we might review investments, walk through a new piece of technology we’re rolling out, or set aside time for training. These meetings keep everyone working from the same information, so clients get the same quality of answer no matter who they talk to. Throughout the day, our team also huddles to keep work moving, whether that means finishing paperwork for a client or getting a second set of eyes on a recommendation.

A good part of the day also goes to planning work clients don’t always see. That might be a retirement cash flow analysis showing how long savings will last at different spending levels, or collaborating with accountants on strategies to reduce taxes. It’s quieter work than a client meeting, but it’s where comprehensive financial planning really takes shape.

Why Does a Fee-Only Fiduciary Advisor’s Day Look Different?

A fee-only fiduciary is paid directly by clients and is required to act in their best interest. With no commissions or product sales involved, the day isn’t organized around sales targets. That leaves room to spend time where clients need it, whether that’s a longer review or a quick call about a new decision.

That idea is a big part of why Flower City Capital exists. The way our days are structured comes from treating every client the way you would want your own family treated.
